A Little Teacher Background

I have been a teacher with Lapeer Community Schools since 1990. I am a proud Lapeer West graduate, went to Northern Michigan University for my Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and obtained my Master’s in Teaching Reading and Language Arts from Oakland University.  I have my +15 in Math Instruction from Colorado State University. I am married to my college sweetheart, Mike, and we have 2 children, Nate and Kirsten.  We also have 2 adorable dogs, Lyla and Ceili (Kaylee). When I am not teaching, I love to travel, take dance lessons, downhill ski, and read. I am very happy to be at Zemmer for my 12th year and a cheering Lightning Bolt!

What you will be learning
English (2 semester class)
8th grade English expand the development of literacy skills and critical reading necessary for high school success.  Students will read, discuss, and analyze narrative and informational text, including genre studies in realistic fiction, science fiction, poetry, tech writing, and persuasion.  Student will continue to write in various narrative and expository forms, essays, and research projects.  Continued language development, including style conventions, and grammatical structures will be taught within the context of student writing.

Math 8 (2 semester class)
Student will engage in lessons designed to understand the common core standards.  The course is designed for students on grade level and preparing for Algebra 1.  Student will use manipulatives, graphing calculators, cooperative learning structures, and multi-media technologies to gain a better understanding of pre-algebra common core standards.  Topics covered include real numbers, algebraic expressions and equations, into to linear functions, fundamental geometry tools, and into to probability and statistics.

First semester will be piloting a program from Connected Mathematics which has already been adopted in the elementary schools.  It is a problem-centered curriculum that promotes an inquiry-based teaching-learning classroom environment. Important mathematical ideas are identified and the essential understandings of these ideas are embedded in a carefully-sequenced set of problems. I'll keep you posted on 2nd semester.
